Frequently Asked Questions

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. It is a full-contact martial art that predominantly focuses on stand-up striking, as well as various clinching techniques and throws. Muay Thai is known as the art/science of eight limbs, due to its brilliant use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, therefore using eight points of contact as opposed to the four points found in Kickboxing (punches and kicks), or the two points found in western style Boxing (punches).

What are the benefits of training Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is the undisputed king of stand-up / striking martial arts. Everything you will be taught is practical in a self-defence or competition context. Muay Thai is widely regarded as the most effective martial art for self-defence, second only to Mixed Martial Arts (a combination of Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling). Self-defence aside, Muay Thai is great for burning fat and toning muscle, as well as improving every aspect of your overall athletic performance - making it a very popular choice for athletes of all disciplines looking to complement their regular training or to keep fit in their off season.

What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), also referred to by many as "ultimate fighting" is a full-contact combat sport that allows the use of fighting techniques from all disciplines. The unique rule-set allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has become widely known over the past few years due to the popularity of fighting organisations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC).

What are the benefits of training Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Since Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) combines three of the most effective styles (Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling) it is undoubtedly the most complete self-defence system. Whether your fight takes place standing, or on the ground, you will be thoroughly prepared. Self-defence aside, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is great for burning fat and building muscle, as well as improving every aspect of your overall athletic performance.

Do I need to train Muay Thai / Kickboxing before transitioning in to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Although it is not a prerequisite, it is highly recommended that you spend at least a month in Muay Thai / Kickboxing before transitioning in to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). The Muay Thai / Kickboxing classes will give you a solid striking / stand-up foundation which will greatly benefit your Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training.

What age group do you cater for?

We provide junior classes for boys and girls aged between 10 and 14. Anyone over the age of 14 is welcome to participate in the senior classes.

What's the risk of getting injured in your classes?

Although there is an element of risk in any sport, particularly contact sports and martial arts, XFC takes every precaution to ensure that the risk is minimised. The beginner and intermediate Muay Thai / Kickboxing classes are completely non-contact. The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) classes, however, consist of a lot of rough Wrestling techniques which infrequently cause injuries.

What attire is recommended for your classes?

This is dependent upon which class you decide to train in. Our Muay Thai / Kickboxing practitioners wear singlets and Muay Thai shorts, whereas our Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) practitioners wear rash guards and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) shorts. Shoes are not required in any of our classes, except for the Strength and Conditioning / Caveman classes.

Do your Muay Thai / Kickboxing classes have a grading system?

Yes. Much like traditional martial arts such as Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Tae Kwon Do, our Muay Thai / Kickboxing classes include a grading system. Due to the impractical nature of coloured belts, our practitioners wear coloured grading singlets to represent their level. New practitioners will be given a white singlet and will progressively work their way toward the highest level - the black singlet. Achieving this final singlet can take anywhere between 3-6 years, depending on the dedication and natural talent of the practitioner.

How much does it cost to train at XFC Narre Warren?

This is entirely dependent upon which class you decide to train in, as well as which membership option you select. The majority of our members are paying $10 per class by way of a (no contract obligation) direct debit membership. For more information on pricing, please visit our facility and speak to any of our helpful staff.
